It was 5:30 a.m. and I had just arrived in Varanasi, India, off a sleeper train. I got to my guesthouse and instinctively climbed the seven flights of stairs to see the sunrise over the famous Ganges River. As I looked over the side of the rooftop terrace, my jaw dropped in disbelief. Below were mothers, fathers, children, cats, dogs, and monkeys all sleeping on their roofs. It was midsummer in Varanasi and sleeping without air-conditioning was pretty difficult. Can you spot the curry?

Shivpur Rathyatra

The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath on the traditional chariot on Saturday commenced in the city under heavy security deployment.Amidst traditional gaiety the devotees took out a procession with the idols of Lord Jagnnath, Subhadra and Balbhadra from the Jagnnath temple in Assi area. After three-day fair, held annually as a part of Rathyatra festival in Rathyatra Crossing, the procession culminated at Shivpur where the idols were placed on the beautifully decorated traditional chariot, after religious rituals.The one-day fair, held annually as a part of Rathyatra festival , in Shivpur Varanasi City.

रथयात्रा

भगवान जगन्नाथ के रथ पर सवार होने के साथ बुधवार को वाराणसी में रथयात्रा मेले की शुरुआत हो गयी। अपनी 200 से ज्यादा वर्षो पुरानी परंपरा को निभाते हुए बुधवार की सुबह भगवान जगन्नाथ ने भाई बलभद्र और बहन सुभद्रा संग रथ पर सवार होकर भक्तों को दर्शन दिए। मान्यता है कि बीमारी से ठीक होने के बाद भगवान घूमने के लिए रथ पर निकलते हैं जिसे रथयात्रा मेल कहा जाता है।

इस दौरान जगन्नाथ मंदिर के पुजारी राधेश्याम से बात करने पर उन्होंने बताया कि वाराणसी शहर के रथयात्रा चौराहे पर बुधवार की भोर से इस रथयात्रा मेले की शुरुआत हुई। सबसे पहले रथ पर सवार भगवान जगन्नाथ, भाई बलभद्र और बहन सुभद्रा की आरती हुई जिसमें शामिल होने के लिए भक्तों की भीड़ जुटी। उसके बाद भक्तों ने भगवान के रथ को खीच कर इस रथयात्रा मेले की शुरुआत की। वैसे तो रथयात्रा का यह पर्व मुख्य तौर पर पुरी में मनाया जाता है। मगर वाराणसी में भी इसकी शुरुआत पुरी ट्रस्ट के जरिये ही हुई और यहाँ भी यह उसी परंपरागत तरीके से मनाया जाता हैं।

मान्यता है कि रथयात्रा के इस पर्व पर भगवान अपने भाई और बहन के साथ नगर भ्रमण और अपनी मौसी के घर जाते हैं। भगवान के दर्शन और उनका रथ खीचने के लिए शहर में भक्तों की भीड़ उमड़ती है और यह पर्व एक मेला बन जाता है। भक्त ये मानते हैं कि रथयात्रा के पर्व पर भगवान जगन्नाथ के दर्शन से उनकी सभी मनोकामनाएं पूरी होती हैं।

Varuna Corridor

The state government has decided to revive the Varuna corridor river project in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency. Under the project, a riverfront will be developed along the Varuna river on the lines of Sabarmati riverfront project of Gujarat.

The corridor will stretch from Aadkeshav ghat near Sangam to Phulwariya area.

Following a revision, the state government will send the plan proposal to the Centre for holding discussion on the project’s implementation and funding.

An official informed that under the project, landscape will be developed which would include walking tracks with space for amusement activities, public utilities and stalls for eateries. In the river belt, activities like movement of motor boats and small-size ships would also begin.

To make these facilities available, a water level of 2-metre depth would be maintained in 45-metre width and 18-km length of the river. Water level will be maintained by dredging and installing regulators and lock channels at different locations. Five terminals have been proposed to come up in the stretch with the entire area to be kept clean by keeping a check on discharge of untreated waste.

According to officials, the project was first planned around a decade ago and Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) had forwarded the proposal to the state government. Sources say that Inland Waterways Authority of India of the central government had found it feasible but the state government put the Rs 172-crore project on the back burner.

VDA officials said that Varuna corridor will be an additional attraction for the tourists who stay in hotels and lodges along the Ganga river. Officials added that corridor will be developed in a way that tourists could easily reach the Varuna corridor by motor boats. The project cost is slated to be increased in the revised plan, they said.
